Legend states that a mare had run away from her homeland in search for adventures and a new life. Since "crossbreeding" was considered a taboo back in the Ancient Days of Equestria, nopony ever looked upon each others' races for love. The Windigos did not like how the young Pegasus mare fell in love with an Earth Pony stallion. In their hatred, the Windigos cursed the two lovers, making sure that the Pegasus's and Earth Pony's ancestors would forever suffer their law. The young offspring were spared, leaving them to pass on the memory of the curse within their souls as beings of ice-type ancient Pegasi magic.

Past: Born to an average family, Kyu was unaware of her family's history until she started showing strange side effects of an unknown disease at a relatively young age. With an average temperature way below the normal values of most ponies, many doctors thought it was anemia and early signs of snow-tick disease. Shrugging off the unusual temperatures, Kyu lead a fairly normal foalhood, chasing other foals, playing games, and overall being care-free. After two years of the unusual temperatures, Kyu started showing a new sign; ice was forming on the edges of her hooves. Her parents concerned, Whispering Willow, Kyu's mother, started studying their history, seeking any kind of clue of what might be causing their daughter's strange conditions. Coming across a ancient storybook in her great grandmother's inherits, Willow began to take up studying texts of the Ancient Frosts. Eventually, Willow finally found something relevant to Kyu's condition: a Curse. Eager to see a specialist on the Windigos, Whispering Willow and Kyu's father, Snowy Granite, journey to Canterlot to visit an elderly unicorn who specialized in such stories of the past. Bits in hoof, Willow asked everypony at the university of what may be causing Kyu's condition. The elder took Kyu in for four days, studying her and the effects of the so-called disease. Willow and Granite waited patiently, and soon had their suspicions confirmed. Kyu is a surviving member of the ancient Flake lineage, and did indeed have a Curse running in her blood. This curse, although present in both male and female members of the family, was made more prevalent in mares because the curse was originally directed at the first mare. Shaken and scared, Kyu and her family made it back to the lower mountainous village of Krystelletine. For five years, Kyu lived with her parents, scared of what may happen if she stepped out of their tiny village. 
Now an adult, Kyu has taken to her own path, and now lives as a harbinger of winter, going from town to town warning ponies of the first snowfall; it almost always snows two or three days after KyuFlake's visit. With the soul of a Windigo, Kyu now uses her curse as a crutch instead of a death sentence. "It's better to live with it rather than deal with it." After deciding to accept her fate, Kyu added her ancestor's name, Flake, to her own. She now studies to learn more about her ancestors, and use her curse for good.
